Elite Spin Bowling Development Camp in Sri Lanka 2027

The Elite Spin Bowling Development Camp in Sri Lanka, part of our overseas placements program, aims to provide some of our most talented young spinners ages 15-18 in the pathway programme with an excellent opportunity to enhance their skills. Participants will engage in comprehensive training covering all aspects of spin bowling. They will face tough challenges while training and playing alongside local talented players, primarily batters and wicketkeepers.

The last four camps included players from eight different counties who participated in this successful programme. As a direct result, some players advanced to play for their county age group teams regularly, some were selected to participate in the Bunbury Festival and others got into EPG/Academy programmes within their respective counties.

The program is led by Eranga Mendis, who has a proven track record of developing numerous professional spinners, including current England internationals Shoaib Bashir and Jaffer Chohan. With over 18 years of coaching experience in spin bowling, he is currently the pathway lead spin bowling coach at Surrey County Cricket Club. Eranga has a deep understanding of what it takes to become a professional spin bowler and is well aware of the ongoing demand in the field.

Players will take part in an effective training program that involves playing in temperatures over 30°C. The program will challenge their views on spin bowling and help them how to set fields and solve problems creatively. They will also learn to trust their methods and have confidence in their ability to break partnerships through spin and control.

The program will offer workshops on the skills and journey required for spin bowlers to secure rookie or professional contracts. Eranga will provide feedback to players and hold follow-up session via Zoom after the tour.

This is an excellent opportunity to prepare for the upcoming cricket season, enabling you to get into the game early and find your rhythm and feel. During the stay, players will be accommodated at the Blue Water Hotel and Spa, a 5-star establishment. This venue offers a quality break from the long school term, allowing you to relax and enjoy time at the beach, pool and partake in various other activities.

Over decades of my experience coaching spinners, it’s always a game of patience developing spin bowlers. It is so important that we are patient in helping them, understanding their needs and observing deeply more often when we say something to them.

Practice doesn’t depend on just bowling, rather it requires a continuous awareness of the flow of consciousness and feeling and sensing whatever is happening – composing yourself and always being aware of that flow.

Unfortunately, there is an expectation amongst some coaches and some captains I witnessed that all wrist spinners should bowl like Shane Warne, when in fact it is likely no one ever will.

Players must focus on developing the fundamental skills of bowling, for these are what exposed at the higher levels.

Encourage a rhythmical approach to the crease, with a gradual build up in momentum allowing the spinner to explode through the crease.
